G G G G nights in hotel Ring-tailed Lemurs ACTIVITY LEVEL Day 1: UK- Madagascar. Fly overnight to Madagascar. Day 2: Antananarivo. Arrive in the capital of Madagascar for an overnight stay. D Day 3: Antsirabe. Enjoy a city tour of Tana ­ the local name of Antananarivo. Afterwards, take a scenic drive south to Antsirabe to stay for two nights. En route stop for lunch in Ambatolampy, the `capital of aluminium' and see people making pots and pans. Continue to Antsirabe and visit artisan workshops. B, L, D Day 4: Antsirabe. Discover daily life in rural Antsirabe on a walking tour. Meet village residents going about their work at home or in the rice fields, and traders offering handicrafts and gem stones. B, L, D Day 5: Sahambavy. Continue south towards Sahambavy, pausing in Ambositra, a woodcarving centre. Stay near Fianarantsoa for two nights, in stilted houses in Sahambavy Lake, surrounded by a tea plantation. B, L, D Day 6: Ranomafana. Visit Ranomfana National Park for a walking tour with local guides in search of endemic golden bambu lemurs. B, L, D Day 7: Ranohira (for Isalo). Continue south through sapphire mining villages and the Ambalavao rice-growing region to Ranohira, gateway to Isalo National Park. Visit a women's paper-making workshop and the Anja Reserve, a conservation site for ring-tailed lemurs and chameleons. Arrive in Isalo for a two-night stay. B, L, D Day 8: Isalo National Park. Isalo National Park is a vast sandstone massif, divided by a canyon. The Bara tribe, who farm local cows called zibus here, regard the mountain as sacred and bury their ancestors' bones in the rock clefts. Explore the park, looking out for birds, reptiles, frogs and the `dancing lemur'! B, L, D Day 9: Ifaty. Head south, through the dry Spiny Land to the former fishing villages of Ifaty and Mangily on the south west coast. Stay two nights at a beach-side hotel. B, L, D Day 10: Ifaty. Visit Reniala Private Reserve, to see endemic plants and statuesque baobab trees, one of which is 1200 years old! Spot a variety of birds here, along with chameleons, geckos and insects. B, L, D Day 11: Andasibe. Fly back to Antananarivo. Drive to Andasibe National Park and stay two nights in Lodge bungalows. B, L, D Day 12: Andasibe National Park. At the Analamazaotra Reserve see tree-ferns, air plants and hundreds of orchid species. Many of the birds, amphibians and animals you will see are unique to Madagascar, including the tree-dwelling lemur, Indri Indri. After lunch head to the Vakona Private Reserve to see more species. B, L, D Day 13: Antananarivo. Return to the capital for an overnight stay, stopping en route at Peyrieras Reptile Reserve to view crocodiles, geckos and the colourful Panther chameleon.
