Excavations of the enormous site started in 1748. Shops, temples and public buildings are still identifiable. Herculaneum and Villa Oplontis: Visit another perfectly preserved site, the town of Herculaneum, which was buried beneath 18 metres of hot mud. Also see the archaeological finds at Oplontis. National Archaeological Museum in Naples: View objects excavated from both sites for an insight into daily Roman life. Paestum: See the iconic remains of this 6th century BC Greek colony in southern Italy ­ the Doric temples, among the best preserved anywhere. Phlegrean Fields: The landscape here is dominated by volcanic activity with fumaroles and craters of steaming mud. See the Cave of Sybil, the Roman cistern, and nearby Pozzuoli with its amphitheatre.
