YORKSHIRE HARROGATE UNWIND Pictured above: Explore the stunning Yorkshire Dales; The Majestic Hotel Harrogate; Idyllic Knaresborough bridge; Brimham Rocks Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales Discover the the historic towns and unique scenery of the Yorkshire Dales... Why here..? Get away from it all walking or driving in the beautiful valleys of the Yorkshire Dales and discover the differences that define them and their market towns. From your Harrogate base it's easy to venture into the rolling landscape of the Southern Dales of Nidderdale and Wharfedale, or the more rugged Northern Dales home to Wensleydale and its famous cheese. Work up an appetite in the fresh air then reward your efforts with a pub lunch or a proper Yorkshire tea back in Harrogate... Situated close to the glorious countryside of North Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Dales, the elegant spa town of Harrogate is a delight to visit. It became deeply fashionable in the 19th century when visitors came to take the waters. The stunning Turkish Baths a beautifully preserved piece of Victorian design with steam rooms and a bracing plunge pool can still be used. The Royal Pump Room Museum explains the history of the town's invigorating sulphur wells, which at their height of popularity attracted such luminaries as Queen Victoria's granddaughter, the Tsarina Alexandra of Russia. Agatha Christie was another famous visitor, she escaped here incognito in 1926, sparking a nationwide manhunt. Harrogate is easy to explore on foot and well known for its smart boutiques, antique shops and galleries. It has many cafes and restaurants, not least Betty's Tea Rooms. You'll visit magnificent Castle Howard, location for Brideshead Revisited, and exquisite Bolton Abbey and pretty Skipton on included excursions, but you might also like to visit local attractions such as Italianate Beningbrough Hall or Harewood House, or perhaps get a taste of the countryside on a nostalgic steam train ride between Bolton Abbey and Embsay. Majestic Hotel Harrogate QQQQ This handsome, 4-star hotel, set within eight acres of landscaped gardens in the centre of Harrogate, is a symbol of the success and prosperity of the spa town in the 19th century. This fine, six-storey building with its elegant portico, was compared to a grand railway station hotel when it opened in July 1900. The interior didn't disappoint either, and the 100 foot-long North South Lounge with its spa town murals, and the Venetian chandeliers of the Reading and Drawing Room are still in pride of place. Enjoy your included meals in the Majestic Restaurant and meals in the elegant bar. The hotel has a health and leisure club with a swimming pool and a beauty salon. There are 170 spacious bedrooms, each with a television, telephone, tea and coffee-making facilities and complimentary Wi-Fi. Optional excursion: Beningbrough (half day).
