HAMPSHIRE BURLEY STAY & EXPLORE New Forest Discovery HALF BOARD Discover the beautiful woodland, rolling heaths and picturesque villages of the magical New Forest. Although it became a National Park in 2005, the New Forest has enjoyed protection for more than 900 years, since William the Conqueror made it a royal hunting area. An ancient system of management is still in place to protect the heaths and woodland, as well as the cattle and ponies that roam there. You can walk directly from your hotel into the forest to follow some of the many walking trails. Explore the pretty village of Burley, a half-mile stroll away, to discover its gift shops, cafes, tea rooms and 17th-century pub. Burley still practises commoning, so ponies and cattle are allowed to roam freely in the forest and may make an appearance on the village streets too! In the New Forest, ponies and cattle actually have right of way over vehicles. A former Burley resident, Sybil Leek, put the village on the map in the 1950s, when she ran an antiques shop here. Leek was open about being a white witch, and among the conventional gift shops, you may spot one or two selling more magical souvenirs... If you'd like to explore on two wheels, cycle hire can be arranged from the hotel. Further afield is the spectacular garden of Exbury which you can visit independently or on an optional excursion. The 200-acre site is home to the Rothschild collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias. Follow paths that weave their way through beautiful themed gardens within the grounds, or let the train take the strain and hop aboard the gardens' own miniature narrow gauge steam railway the circular route runs for two kilometres and offers lovely views of the garden. The historic market town of Ringwood is around six miles away with the classic seaside town of Bournemouth just an 18-mile, 30-minute drive away. Your base The 3-star Moorhill House Hotel (3Q) is a short distance from the village of Burley on the western edge of the New Forest, making it the perfect base from which to explore the National Park on its doorstep. Tucked away at the end of a private lane, surrounded by landscaped gardens, forest and heath, its secluded position makes it a haven of relaxation and, coupled with its welcoming, country-house atmosphere, will make it hard to leave! There's no mistaking where you are, as New Forest ponies may be spotted roaming outside the hotel. There's a comfortable lounge area and a cosy bar which, along with the restaurant, overlooks the gardens. Step outside for a game of badminton or croquet on the lawns. Indoors, relax in the sauna or take a dip in the small heated pool. All 31 bedrooms have an en suite with bath or shower, a flat-screen television with free-view channels, a telephone, hairdryer, free Wi-Fi, an ironing board and iron, complimentary toiletries and tea and coffee-making facilities. A limited number of ground floor bedrooms are also available and the hotel does not have a lift. 4 nights from 319^ Single rooms at no extra cost* l l l l l l Half board Welcome drink Local expert New Forest orientation walk Porterage at your hotel Cancellation rights.
