GLOUCESTERSHIRE GLOUCESTER UNWIND INTERESTS SPECIAL Pctured above: Gloucester Cathedral; Picturesque Arlington Row in the Cotswolds The Glorious Cotswolds and Gloucester HALF BOARD Why here..? With rolling hills stretching from the Dorset coast to the edge of Yorkshire, the Cotswolds is the largest of the 38 designated 'Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty' in England and Wales. The majority of this important unspoilt landscape lies within Gloucestershire, including the ancient Forest of Dean and the stunning Wye Valley. Aged market towns of honey-hued local stone and grand Regency spa towns, castles, cathedrals, Roman remains and famous battlesites, not to mention 3000 miles of public footpaths, beckon visitors to the Cotswolds... Amazingly, five English counties can claim some of the landscape of rolling hills or 'wolds' that is known as the Cotswolds, although Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire are the main ones. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is dotted with charming hamlets, stately homes and gardens. The city of Gloucester itself is set below the Cotswolds Hills in the lush Severn Valley. It has a long history, from the Roman fort to Elizabethan port the furthest inland in Britain. In 1794 a new canal helped create a direct trading route to London and the Midlands. The city has been undergoing a major regeneration programme, particularly at the historic Gloucester Docks. This lively, revitalised waterfront is home to Victorian warehouses converted into museums and exhibits about the city port's history, along with restaurants and bars. You won't want to miss the cathedral either. Here you can trace back the architecture from its Norman origins, through the medieval period and to the present day. Admire the fan-vaulted cloisters, stained glass windows and the tomb of King Edward II, then perhaps climb the tower's 269 steps or descend to the crypt... You'll visit the American Museum and Sudeley Castle and Gardens on included excursions, with an optional excursion to the Forest of Dean. A visit to the National Arboretum at Westonbirt is a must for nature lovers, while Bristol and Bath are perfect for sightseeing and shopping. Optional excursion: The Forest of Dean (half day).
