The Tate, St Ives At first glance St Ives, a small coastal town some 300 miles from London might seem an unlikely place for one of the UK's most prominent art galleries. However the Cornish fishing town has an artistic history dating back to Victorian times when painters and illustrators flocked there, attracted by the unique quality of its lighting. Tate originally took over the management of the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden in 1980 and decided to build a gallery to showcase works by artists who had lived or worked in St Ives. The site of a former gasworks overlooking Porthmeor Beach and the Atlantic Ocean was chosen and the Tate Gallery, St Ives opened in June 1993, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors a year to see displays of modern art ever since, leading to an extension in 2017.
