Since climbing from boats, negotiating steps and walking uneven terrain may be necessary, it requires a reasonable level of mobility. Your guide will discuss the best things to see and do each day, based around the following activities... A full-day guided walking tour of St Mary's, including Old Town, the Lower Moors Nature Trail and the metal lighthouse at Peninnis Head. l A crossing to Tresco for a guided walk and a visit to the world famous sub-tropical gardens. Based in the ruins of a former Benedictine abbey, these are home to 20,000 exotic species including Mexican yukka, New Zealand metrosideros and Chilean wine palm. A day at leisure with plenty to do, from hiring a bike or swimming at the beach to exploring a nature trail. Places of interest on St Mary's include the Isles of Scilly Museum and the unfinished fortress of Harry's Walls. l l Tremendous Tresco Tresco is home to world famous sub-tropical Tresco Abbey Garden. The garden makes light of salt spray and Atlantic gales with the Scillies' mild climate able to host more than 20,000 species of exotic plants from 80 countries around the globe, many of which would stand no chance of survival even on the Cornish mainland less than 30 miles away. The garden was built in the 19th century around the ruins of an ancient Benedictine Abbey as a private garden for proprietor of the islands, Augustus Smith. At the time there were few trees on the island so Smith opted to plant belts of deciduous trees as shelter. The wind-breaks allowed the carved stone terraces in the garden to thrive, with the hotter drier ones at the top suitable for South African and Australian plants while the humidity lower down favoured flora from New Zealand and South America.
