Join an orientation tour of Harrogate and free time to have dinner (at your own arrangement) before you make your way to the glittering Royal Hall, to take your first category seats for a professional performance of a popular Gilbert & Sullivan opera. The next morning enjoy another talk from your hosts, followed by lunch and the opportunity for more free time in Harrogate. Perhaps visit famous Betty's Tea Rooms or explore the shops in the chic Montpellier quarter before setting off for your second opera. With the famous arias still fresh in your memory, depart the following morning after breakfast. Each weekend break includes two evening opera performances by the National G&S Opera company: 9th August, 2019 departures: The Pirates of Penzance Throw together a band of pirates, a bumbling police force, a hapless Major General, and his gaggle of maiden daughters and you have the ingredients for a rollicking comic opera. The Yeoman of the Guard Known as the darkest and most emotional of the Savoy Operas, the tale is set in the Tower of London and focuses on the plight of scientist and former soldier Colonel Fairfax, who has been wrongly accused of sorcery and is set to be executed within the hour. 16th August, 2019 departures: The Mikado One of the most-performed pieces of musical theatre ever written, the operetta is set in exotic Japan. A tangled tale of a soft-hearted executioner, the lovesick son of the Mikado the Japanese Emporer and the beautiful maiden Yum-Yum. Introducing your hosts Mezzo-soprano Judith Buckle studied at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama and was a member of the BBC Singers before travelling the globe with the London Savoyards aboard the QE2. She has had a wide and varied career, ranging from early music to grand opera where she has performed more than 40 principal roles in performances around the world. Bass baritone Matthew Craven first ventured onto the stage 40 years ago in the chorus of a production of L'elisir d'amore. Since then he has performed a multitude of roles in music hall, plays, musicals, operetta and opera. Matthew now runs Cameo Opera with his wife Judith, performing over 120 shows each year.
