Relax by the sea and discover `who dunnit', as you enjoy your sleuth solving stay in this classic British seaside town." Makala Thomas, Senior Product and Purchasing Executive The History of Murder Mystery The murder mystery genre is believed to have been born in the first half of the 19th century however it was not until 1935 that the first popular game was launched, known as Jury Box. That game followed a very different premise to the murder mysteries of today, with the players taking the roll of jurors and listening to evidence presented by the prosecutor and defendant, plus crime scene photos before casting their vote for a verdict on a ballot paper. The first murder mystery board game, Cluedo of course, was not released until 1948, but once again the game differs vastly from the modern, interactive dinner party mysteries which became popular in the 1980s, with the first big hit in the genre simply titled Mafia. At immersive events the leading roles are played by actors who commit scripts to memory and know all aspects of the particular case. Guests generally take on the role of detective with a view to deducing the culprit and solving the mystery over the course of two or three sessions.
