Later head to Heraklion to explore the Archaeological Museum ­ home to treasures from of the Minoan civilization. Knossos: Take a trip to see the impressive remains of 4000-year-old Knossos Palace. Górtyn, Phaistos and Mátala: Visit the remains of the Doric city of Górtyn and the ancient city of Phaistos. You can also explore the man-made caves, formerly used as catacombs by both Romans and Christians, at Mátala. Rethymnon and Armeni: Explore Rethymnon's 16th-century Venetian fortezza that fell to the Ottomans in 1646, the archaeological museum, and in nearby Armeni, a Late Minoan necropolis. Gournia, Elounda and Spinalonga: Travel to Elounda and hop on a boat for the short trip to the island of Spinalonga ­ known locally as 'the island', which once served as a leper colony. You'll also see the most complete excavation of a Minoan town at Gourni Malia and Lasithi Plateau: Visit the Minoan palace site at Malia, take a scenic drive around the Lasithi Plateau and see the Dikteon Cave, the legendary birthplace of Zeus.
