They extend in total to some 800 kilometres and were designed to transport water. They had their beginnings in the 15th century when basic water channels were created to supply water needed for crops and mills. Over the ensuing centuries they were expanded by private enterprise until the 19th century when the island saw the introduction of State levadas with some 400 kilometres of levadas being created between 1947 and 1967! Today they offer an opportunity to view this beautiful island from a unique perspective. Rabacal enchanted forest and waterfalls: Walk through a laurel forest along an old levada, passing the Risco waterfall and the 25 Fontes levada, passing through a tunnel. Visit a sugar cane factory at Calheta which only operates for one six-week period each year, its product being used for molasses, honey cake and brandy. The Eastern Cape-Ponta Sao Lourenco: Walk to the peninsula of Ponta Sao Lourenco with its volcanic rock formations and Atlantic views, continuing to Canical and visit the whaling museum, plus the town of Machico where the island was first discovered by the Portuguese in 1419. The Green Couldron-Calerao Verde: Walk in the beautiful natural park of Queimadas with its giant rhododendrons, lush forests and waterfalls. Walk through tunnels, see the peaks of Ribeira Grande, and admire breathtaking views in the `green couldron' vallley with its waterfall and lake. Assobiadores-Fanal: This panoramic walk takes in fine views of the Rabacal valley and forested area of Chao da Ribeira, en route to Fanal in the Laurissilva forest a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. One Valley,Two Levadas: See two different levadas as you walk the Levada do Moinho in the valley of Ribeira da Ponta do Sol with its sea views and riverine valley. Next, ascend and continue to the Levada Nova, where the countryside includes waterfalls and a tunnel. Walks are up to 13 kilometres. While they range from easy to moderate, please note levada walks can be strenuous and require navigating ascents, descents, steps and tunnels in some places.
