The history of Twinwood and Glenn Miller In the 1940s Twinwood Airfield was an RAF training base. During this time, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra were based in nearby Bedford as a safer alternative to London, and regularly used Twinwood, even playing an outdoor concert at the airfield in August 1944. In December of that year, Major Glenn Miller was due to fly from Twinwood to France, but after boarding a Norseman aircraft outside Twinwood Control Tower, he was never seen again, sparking a mystery that still fascinates the world. The Control Tower was restored to its original condition and opened to the public in 2002. To celebrate this, a Glenn Miller Concert was held, becoming the forerunner of what is now the annual Twinwood Festival. The tower is now known as the Glenn Miller Museum, featuring exhibits dedicated to his life and music, and has become somewhat of a shrine to his fans from around the world.
