The arching Old Bridge known as Stari Most stood proud across the River Neretva for 427 years until it was destroyed on November 9, 1993 in one of the most iconic moments of the Croat-Bosniak War. It was subsequently rebuilt using funding from around the world, using a combination of original stones recovered from the riverbed by divers from the Hungarian Army and Tenelia stone from local quarries. It was reconstructed as close to the original as possible by a Turkish company which specialises in Ottoman construction techniques and reopened in July 2004. Along with the historic city centre, which features an Ottoman quarter with cobbled streets and architecture all the way through to the neo-classical period, the bridge is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An optional excursion will reveal the highlights of the city, an important trading centre under Turkish rule, including the old bazar, mosque and a traditional Turkish house.
