To find out more visit saga.co.uk/danube Your cruise Day 1: Budapest. Fly to Budapest before being transferred to the port where you will embark Amadeus Royal. Look forward to your welcome drink reception and dinner as you remain moored here overnight. Day 2: Budapest. An included city tour this morning will reveal the highlights and help you get your bearings so you can explore independently later this afternoon. Alternatively you might opt to join an excursion to Gödöllo Palace or to the Lazar Equestrian Park Horse Farm before Amadeus Royal sets sail this evening. Day 3: Kalocsa to Mohács. Perhaps disembark in Kalocsa early this morning join an optional full-day excursion through the Hungarian lowlands to Puszta, where you can watch traditional horsemanship, rejoining your ship when she arrives in Mohács this afternoon. You have a few hours here to explore the home of some of Hungary's most exciting folk traditions. Amadeus Royal continues cruising towards Belgrade late this afternoon. Day 4: Belgrade. After sailing through the morning, this afternoon join an included city tour of Serbia's capital, Belgrade, one of the oldest cities in Europe. Your tour also features a visit to the historic 18th-century citadel, Kalemegdan Fortress. Day 5: The Iron Gates. Spend the day cruising an exciting stretch of the Danube to the `Iron Gates', a gorge framed by sheer cliffs. Day 6: Nikopol to Svistov to Rousse. Arrive in Nikopol early this morning where you might opt to join an optional excursion to Pleven. The ancient city is known for its museums and is famous for the 1877 siege which saw Bulgaria break away from Ottoman rule. This afternoon another optional excursion visits Veliko Tarnovo. Excursion participants will rejoin the ship in Svistov before you sail on to Rousse where you moor overnight. Day 7: Rousse.Wake up in Rousse, nicknamed 'Little Vienna', this morning. The city prospered from its location on the Danube and is home to many grand and beautiful buildings. Perhaps join an optional tour this morning before sailing on towards Braila. Day 8: Braila. Arrive in Braila this afternoon where you moor tonight meaning you can enjoy the rest of the day discovering one of the three most important and wealthy ports on the Danube in this region during the 19th century. Your stay Day 9: Braila to Brasov. After breakfast disembark Amadeus Royal and enjoy a scenic drive through the Carpathian Mountains, with lunch and some free time in the hills included. Continue on to Brasov and the locally rated 4-star Sport Hotel and Spa (4Q), in the heart of Transylvania, where you will stay for three nights on a half-board basis. (On the October 14, 2020, departure you will instead stay at the 5-star Hotel Aro Palace). Day 10: Transylvania. Take a short drive to the centre of Brasov for an included tour of this beautiful town, including entrance to the impressive Black Church. Day 11: Transylvania. Enjoy an included visit to 14th-century Bran Castle, the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula. Day 12: Transylvania to Bucharest to UK. Bran Castle During your stay in Brasov you can enjoy an included visit to 14th-century Bran Castle, the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula. The author's character, is a Transylvanian Count with a castle located high above a valley perched on a rock with a flowing river below in the Principality of Transylvania. Stoker never actually visited Romania but depicted the imaginary Dracula's castle based upon an illustration of Bran Castle in Charles Boner's book Transylvania: Its Product and Its People, published in London in 1865. The castle is also said to have been the site where Vlad the Impaler, ruler of this area ­ Walachia ­ was imprisoned for two months in 1462 after being captured by the army of Hungarian King Matei Corvin.
