Your journey with us... December 19: UK to Cologne. Travel by coach from Folkestone to Cologne, via Eurotunnel or ferry, and embark MS Asara. Enjoy a welcome drink and dinner on board, and cruise overnight to Mainz. December 23: Breisach. Arrive in Breisach in the early hours. Today look forward to an included excursion into the Black Forest to Lake Titisee. Enjoy a light lunch in a restaurant overlooking the lake and a boat trip, before continuing your cruise along the Rhine towards Basel in Switzerland. Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress If you want to stretch your legs and take in the fresh winter air on Boxing Day afternoon, perhaps join an optional excursion after arriving in Koblenz. Immortalised by Byron and Herman Melville, lofty fortifications have glowered over Koblenz since 1,000AD and changed faces over the centuries. The Prussians constructed Festung Ehrenbreitstein in the early 19th century, when Rhineland became a Prussian province. Despite being Europe's second largest fortress, after Gibraltar, it played no part in either WWI or WWII. Enjoy a panoramic cable car ride from Koblenz up to the fortress, the views are astounding and you'll learn about the history of the site. There will also be a guided walk around the historic city of Koblenz where you can admire the elegant architecture. December 20: Mainz. Arrive in Mainz around later this afternoon. Explore the ancient city with its old quarter of half-timbered houses and home to a magnificent Romanesque cathedral. Perhaps explore the famous Gutenberg Museum, dedicated to Johannes Gutenberg known as the 'father of modern printing'. Christmas Eve: Basel. Basel is located at the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France. Spend the day exploring or join an optional full-day tour to the Bernese Oberland to see stunning Grindelwald, Interlaken and the Eiger and Monch Mountains. Your cruise resumes late tonight as you begin a 400 kilometre cruise north. December 21: Mainz to Mannheim. Arrive in Mannheim after breakfast. Join an included excursion to the university town of Heidelberg on the banks of the River Neckar with its Old Bridge and ruined castle high above the city. Set sail at lunchtime and cruise through the afternoon and evening. Christmas Day: Sailing. Spend Christmas Day cruising the majestic Rhine. Look forward to meals in the grand restaurant, or a more intimate speciality restaurant at the stern boasting an open kitchen and panoramic views. December 22: Kehl (for Strasbourg). After arriving in Kehl in the early hours, look forward to visiting a French city with distinctive German influences. Discover its cobbled streets, picturesque half-timbered houses and ornate Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame, on an included tour and cruise on the canals of the city. This afternoon is at leisure to explore independently. A transfer to and from the city centre from the mooring will be provided. Leave Kehl this evening for the voyage towards Breisach. Boxing Day: Koblenz. Sail to Koblenz this morning on the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers and an important centre for the wine industry, arriving around midday. Perhaps join an optional tour which also visits the fortress, built by the Prussians. Depart later tonight and cruise overnight to Cologne. December 27: Cologne to UK.
