Rotterdam is nicknamed 'Manhattan on the Meuse' due to its impressive skyscrapers and modern architecture such as cubic houses and the striking Erasmus Bridge. The harbour is right in the centre of town and as you approach the sight of whitewashed buildings with red tiled roofs tumbling down the verdant mountain is spectacular. November 9. Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria, the third largest of the seven main Canary Islands, with a sub-tropical climate, coastal valleys, beautiful sandy beaches and mountainous peaks. Visitors from all over Europe head to the historic Old Town, Vegueta to explore the cobbled streets and squares. November 10. Santa Cruz, Tenerife. Arrive 0700. Depart 2000. The largest of the Canaries is dominated by the lofty heights of Mount Teide, which at 12,197 feet is Spain's tallest mountain. Tenerife's capital Santa Cruz sits just below the eastern tip of the island and this bustling city has its share of colonial architecture and many interesting museums. Plant lovers may like to explore the Botanical Gardens founded by Charles III of Spain in 1788 and the Orchid Gardens of Sitro Litre. November 11. Arrecife, Lanzarote. Arrive 0800. Depart 1400. Named after the black volcanic reef that protects the city's coastline, Arrecife once provided the perfect cover for ships hiding from pirates. Nowadays, the vibrant seafront acts as a gateway for travellers wishing to explore the town or the rest of this intriguing island. Agadir is a modern city with an underbelly of old-world charm. Here, you can loose yourself in Suq al-Had market where the air is thick with the scent of spice or stretch your legs on a long walk to the Agadir Kasbah, originally built in the 1500s but partially destroyed in the 1960s earthquake.
