The town which is known by the Valenciano-speaking locals as Xbia is considered environmentally close to perfect by the World Health Organisation and new building developments in the town are subject to height restrictions, giving it a different look to other resort towns on the Costa. The Old Town boasts ancient narrow streets built with original Tosca sandstone and it is rich in medieval history. The Gothic church of San Bartolome has dominated the centre of town since the 15th century while next door the indoor market offers local fresh produce every day. The charming port is surrounded by whitewashed houses, shops, cafes, bars and restaurants while the landmark church of Our Lady of Loreto has a roof designed to resemble the hull of a ship.
