Its purpose was to avoid the month-long voyage around Spain, which, at the time, could be hostile with Barbary pirates. The Canal Du Midi, sometimes known as the 'Canal of Two Seas' took 12,000 labourers (1,000 of which were women) nearly 30 years to complete, and stretches for 150 miles, passing nearly 100 hundred locks. On an included excursion, join a cruise along a section of the canal, which is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Embark your canal boat in Beziers, and enjoy a scenic cruise taking in the famous `staircase' locks of Fonserances, the 17th-century Malpas tunnel and much more. Little Boats of the Mediterranean.
