PORTUGAL Delights of Oporto and the Douro Valley RELAXED 7 nights from £849 Including optional travel insurance or a reduction of £20 if not required§ From medieval mountain towns to vineyard-clad valleys, journey into the heart of Portugal's historic wine-growing region to witness scenes of everyday pastoral life that have hardly changed over the centuries. The River Douro links the cities of Oporto and Via Nova de Gaia ACTIVITY LEVEL Day 1: UK-Oporto-Termas de Sao Vicente. Fly to Oporto and stay for two nights at the locally rated 4-star Palace Hotel and Spa, Sao Vicente, with dinner included. D Day 2: Oporto. With its stately architecture and narrow streets, Oporto has lent its name to both the country and to port wine. Today's full-day excursion reveals the city's stately architecture and narrow streets, and allows time for lunch (not included) in the old fishermen's quarter of Ribeira, the liveliest part of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This afternoon, enjoy a guided tour of a port wine cellar with a tasting. Return to your hotel for dinner. B, D Day 3: Termas de Sao Vicente-AmaranteRegua-Carvalhal. Travel to Amarante, a sleepy little town founded in 360BC above the River Tâmega. You'll have the chance to shop for souvenirs such as embroidery and table linen in the main street. After lunch (own expense), continue to Régua for a memorable heritage railway journey (on June to October departures) following the Douro valley. An alternative train journey is included on other departures. Afterwards, continue to the spa resort of Carvalhal for a two-night stay at the locally rated 4-star Palace Hotel Asturias. Enjoy a folklore show tonight. B, D Day 4: Highlands experience. This morning an optional excursion visits the hill-top town of Viseu which is set on a plateau in a respected wine-growing region. Later this afternoon, enjoy an included guided visit to Castro Daire in the agricultural highlands region. Here you can embrace the relaxed highlands lifestyle with home-made pastries and tea that is grown locally in highland plantations. An optional dinner in a local restaurant is available. B Day 5: Carvalhal-Lamego-Tabuaco. Travel to Lamego on an included morning excursion that visits Lamego, the medieval capital of the high Douro, and the beautiful baroque sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Rémedios. There is an excellent view of Lamego and the Douro Valley from the church. Also included is a visit to Lamego's museum. Continue to Tabuaco for three nights at the locally rated 4-star Plácido Hotel Douro. Enjoy a folklore show tonight. B, D Day 6: Douro river cruise. Travel to the quayside in Régua and board your Douro riverboat. Enjoy a short cruise, enjoying a glass of port and the changing scenery as you pass pine-clad mountainous slopes, forests and vineyards before returning to Régua. You'll have some free time to explore Régua and buy some lunch. A scenic drive back to your hotel passes the villages of Ucanha and Salzedas. En route you'll visit the beautiful Murganheira wine cellar, renowned for its fine wines, some of which you will taste, including their sparkling wine. B, D Day 7: Tabuaco. At leisure. Perhaps join an optional excursion to the small city of Vila Real and the Mateus Palace. Here you can explore the beautifully landscaped gardens and admire the mansion, built in the Portuguese baroque style and featured on the Mateus Rosé wine label. Tonight, a farewell dinner is served at your hotel. B, D Day 8: Oporto-UK. Travel to Oporto airport for your return flight to the UK.
