Day 1: UK-Catania, Sicily. Fly to Catania in Sicily, then transfer to Milazzo and take the ferry to the Aeolian island of Lipari. Spend the next three nights at the locally rated 4-star Hotel Gattopardo, just a short distance from the city centre. D Day 2: Lipari. Transfer by boat to Vulcano island, home of the dormant volcano of the same name. Walk to the summit, taking in views of the crater, before returning to the port area. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure to perhaps enjoy the mud baths (charge applies) or explore the beach with its volcanic black sand. B, D Day 4: Stromboli. Depart by ferry this morning for the island of Stromboli, where you'll stay overnight at the locally rated 3-star Hotel Miramare or Hotel Ossidiana, dependent on departure date. After a pizza lunch, you'll walk up the active volcano of Stromboli. Reach the summit by nightfall and witness the natural firework display of volcanic activity and explosions, before descending via a different route and returning to your hotel. Please note part of this walk will be conducted in the dark, when a torch will be required. Dinner will be boxed, `picnic' style. B, L, D Day 5: Linguaglossa, Sicily. B, D Day 6: North Etna Discover the north of Mount Etna, starting from the base camp of Piano Provenzana. Walk to the site of the 2002 eruptions, before descending to Monte Nero, observing 19th century lava flows and the Grotta delle Palombe, a cave formed during the 1669 eruption. Enjoy a picnic lunch during your walk. B, L, D Day 7: Randazzo. Set off from the village of Randazzo whose buildings are constructed using local volcanic stone, passing beechwoods, craters and caves formed during Etna's 1981 eruption. B, D Day 8: Sicily-UK. After breakfast transfer to Catania airport for your return flight to the UK. B "A huge variety of walks with on lava flows, at the top of Volcano, Stromboli and parts of Etna. Etna with its meadows of spring flowers and the Lipari walking tour and fascinating museum and lovely town were also excellent. We even walked through a lava tunnel in total darkness."
