Diocletians Palace, Split Imagine living inside a ruin... the people of Split are very happy to! The old town occupies the remnants of the vast Imperial Palace built between AD 295 and AD 305 as a retirement home for the Emperor Diocletian. By the 7th century the abandoned palace had become a small town. Inside the fortified perimeter walls former corridors had become streets and alleys crammed with homes and businesses. Despite this, much of the Roman structure survives, including the Mausoleum of Diocletian the original Temple of Jupiter, now the cathedral, the Northern Gate and the Peristyle a central courtyard surrounded by columns. Incredibly, around 3000 people still live and work within the complex. Getting You There Prices are based on easyJet or Thomas Cook Airlines from Gatwick or Thomas Cook Airlines from Manchester dependent on date of departure.
