Richard Newsome, Expert Holiday Creator Le Seu, Palma Palma, capital of Majorca, is an attractive, vibrant city but its most outstanding feature is the beautiful Gothic cathedral. Known locally as Le Seu, it is an emblem of the city. Commissioned by King James l after he survived a fearful storm during his voyage to the island to defeat the ruling Moors, it was built on the site of the main mosque, overlooking the Bay of Palma. The cathedral underwent modernisation by Antonio Gaudi (of Sagrada Familia fame) in the late nineteenth century, although he abandoned the project after 13 years and the work was completed by his pupils. It has one of the worlds largest stained glass windows the Rose Window measuring almost 12 metres in diameter, and when the sun shines through it sends rainbow hues dancing throughout the interior giving rise to the name, `The Cathedral of Light'.
