Discover the rustic charm and unique culture of the country's `heel', then journey through remote Calabria, pausing in a European Capital of Culture for 2019 ­ Matera, before enjoying the classic beauty of Sicily. Mount Etna dominates Taormina in Sicily ACTIVITY LEVEL Day 1: UK-Naples-Caserta. After taking Saga's included UK door-to-door travel service to the airport, fly to Naples then transfer to Caserta, staying overnight at the locally rated 4-star Hotel dei Cavalieri. Located in the heart of the town, the hotel overlooks the Piazza Luigi Vanvitelli and is a short distance from the Royal Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. En route, you'll visit a cantina in the foothills of Mount Vesuvius to tour the vineyard, sip the wines and sample tasty produce. D Day 2: Alberobello. After visiting the medieval town of Trani in Puglia ­ the `heel' of Italy ­ with its castle, cathedral and old town, stay four nights at the locally rated 4-star Grand Hotel La Chiusa di Chietri. On the outskirts of Alberobello, the hotel is set in its own grounds which were part of the original farm or 'chiusa', from which the hotel takes its name. The hotel features a wellness centre, an outdoor pool (seasonal) and a spa offering a variety of treatments (additional cost). B, D Day 3: Alberobello, Martina Franca and Ostuni. An included guided tour takes in charming Alberobello ­ famed for its unique 'trulli' houses. You'll also visit Martina Franca, with its particularly beutiful old town, and the 'white city' of Ostuni, where whitewashed buildings set on a hillside overlook the sea. B, D Day 4: Alberobello. Today is at leisure. Join an optional full-day excursion to Bari, the lively capital of the Puglia region and an important port since Norman times. You'll also have time to enjoy an ice-cream at the charming seaside town of Polignano a Mare, perched on limestone cliffs above the sea. B, D Day 5: Alberobello. Enjoy the day at leisure or join an optional excursion to Lecce, the stunning baroque city known as the `Florence of the south', which includes the opportunity to see inside a prestigious 'Palazzo Nobiliare' house and enjoy an aperitif as guests of the family. B, D Day 6: Altomonte. Travel to Altomonte in Calabria, via Matera ­ a European capital of Culture for 2019 ­ where you'll see the intriguing houses and churches carved out of rock and known as `i sassi'. Stay at the family-run 4-star Hotel Barbieri for three nights. B, D Day 7: Altomonte, rural Calabria. A three-quarter-day included excursion takes you through the scenic rural Calabrian interior. B, D Day 8: Altomonte. Enjoy an orientation tour of Altomonte to explore its historical treasures. B, D Day 9: Acireale, Sicily. Your journey this morning takes you south to board the ferry across the straits of Messina, a sea crossing of about 25 minutes. On arrival in Sicily, enjoy a scenic drive to Acireale, a town overlooking the sea on the slopes of Mount Etna, where you'll stay at the locally rated 4-star Grand Hotel Maugeri in the town centre, facing a small garden. The old town, with its Baroque churches, is a short walk away. B, D Day 10: Acireale, Sicily. An optional excursion takes you to one of Sicily's oldest tourist destinations, picturesque Taormina with its ancient Greek theatre and dramatic backdrop. You then continue to Mount Etna. B, D Day 11: Acireale, Sicily. Perhaps join a full-day optional boat trip to the beautiful Aeolian Islands. Visit Vulcano with its black volcanic sands and Lipari, off Sicily's northern coast (weather permitting). B, D Day 12: Acireale, Sicily. On your last day in Sicily you can either relax in the sun or join a final optional trip to Syracuse, a city founded nearly 3,000 years ago. B, D Day 13: Catania-UK.
