Out of the ashes... Following a massive earthquake in 1693 which virtually destroyed Noto, a local architect, the Duke of Camastra, was quickly commissioned to rebuild the city. At this time the lavishly ornate baroque style was very much in fashion, especially with the Catholic Church who saw the characteristic baroque church domes, decorated with images of saints and angels, as a potent symbol of heaven. Other baroque characteristics, also seen on grand houses locally, include curved facades, sometimes topped with a belfry, grand external stairways and balconies supported by gargoyles or cherubs. Noto cathedral is a prime example of the style and the entire old town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its wealth of Sicilian baroque masterpieces.
