Croatia's capital Zagreb is one of the great cities of central Europe and claims to have the highest concentration of museums in the world. On your tour look out for the cathedral, the largest in Croatia. It was mostly reconstructed in the 19th century after near destruction by an earthquake in 1880. Luckily the 14th-century frescoes, and an altarpiece attributed to Dürer, survive. Also see the 13th-century Stone Gate or Kamenita Vrata, with its painting of the Virgin Mary which escaped, 'miraculously', the great fire of 1731 and has since become a place of pilgrimage. Other highlights include the old City Hall, elegant 16th to 19th-century town houses, the baroque facade of the Croatian National Theatre, the Zrinjevac Promenade with its Musical Pavilion, and the Strossmayer Palace, which houses a collection of European art.
