MALTA & HER ISLANDS Islands of Antiquity 10 nights from £1199^ Including optional travel insurance or a reduction of £54 if not required§ Discover the rich and turbulent history of Malta and Gozo, which together have the greatest density of historic sites of any country on earth. Our island-hopping tour will reveal 5,000-year-old Neolithic temples, dramatic natural wonders, the architectural splendours of the Knights of St John and heroic tales from World War II. The island's rugged coast ACTIVITY LEVEL Day 1: UK-Sliema. Fly to Malta and travel to Sliema for four nights, on a half-board basis, at the locally rated 4-star Diplomat Hotel. D Day 2: Tarxien and Ghar Dalam. An included tour of the UNESCO-listed Tarxien Temples and the prehistoric site of Ghar Dalam awaits you this afternoon. The sacred Tarxien Temples, built between 3,600 BC and 2,500 BC, were hidden for centuries until their discovery in 1914. A short hop south towards the coast takes you to the Ghar Dalam caves, Malta's oldest prehistoric site, where the remains of Ice Age animals have been found. B, D Day 3: Valletta. This morning, look forward to a full-day tour of historic Valletta. Walk in the footsteps of the Knights of St John with a visit to the impressive Co-Cathedral and Archaeology Museum. Pause for lunch at a restaurant of your choice then visit the Lascaris War Rooms and The Malta Experience, where you'll learn about the island's long and turbulent history. B, D Day 4: Sliema. Today you may like to join an Ta' Pinu Victoria Marsalforn Gozo COMINO Malta nights in hotel St Paul's Bay Mdina Sliema Valletta Tarxien Temples Mosta Luqa Hagar Qim Blue Grotto Marsaxlokk Ghar Dalam optional excursion to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, followed by a Grand Harbour cruise. Alternatively, you may like to simply relax at your hotel and enjoy a stroll along the seafront promenade. B, D Optional excursion: Grand Harbour cruise (one hour). Drive to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk where colourful boats bob in the harbour and fishermen still mend their own nets. Afterwards, sit back and relax during a leisurely cruise around Valletta's harbour (available year-round, weather-permitting). Day 5: Malta-Gozo. Spend the morning at leisure or perhaps join an optional excursion to the ancient temples of Hagar Qim and afterwards enjoy a photo stop at the cliffs above the Blue Grotto caverns to see the intense colour of the water beneath them. This afternoon, catch the ferry to Gozo for a three-night, half-board stay at the 4-star Calypso Hotel. Situated at the water's edge overlooking Marsalforn Bay, the hotel is a stone's throw from the shores of the Mediterranean. B, D Day 6: Gozo. Your first day in Gozo is spent enjoying an included excursion to the capital, Victoria. Here you'll visit the historic Citadel whose hilltop position affords stunning views of the lush countryside and the Gordan Lighthouse. Before lunch at leisure in Victoria, you'll also be able to visit Period House within one of the finest surviving houses in the Citadel, and the cathedral. Later, enjoy an included visit to the majestic Rotunda Church in Xewkija before returning to Marsalforn for a guided walk along the coastal salt pans. Dating from 1740, they are still in use today, producing several tons of sea salt every year. B, D Day 7: Gozo. This morning you'll head out on an included full-day tour of Gozo, starting with Ta'Pinu, Malta's national shrine. Marvel at the wonderful serenity of this basilica which houses almost 2,000 individually carved sculptures. Next you'll stop at the site of the remains of the Azure Window. The striking natural arch that featured in films such as Clash of the Titans and The Count of Monte Cristo was destroyed by a 2017 storm. A spot of shopping awaits you at Fontana Cottage, where you can see lace and delicate filigree jewellery being produced, before lunch at leisure in Xlendi. Finally visit the amazing Ggantija Temples, which dates back 5,000 years! B, D Day 8: Gozo-Malta. Return by ferry to Malta where you'll stay at the locally rated 4-star Seashells Resort at Suncrest on the outskirts of Qawra. Enjoy a final three nights at your hotel on an all-inclusive basis, including a free bar serving local alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks 12 hours a day. B, L, D Day 9: Mosta and Mdina. Begin your half-day included excursion with a drive through Mosta in the centre of the island. Here you can catch a glimpse of the Church of St Mary, thanks to its vast dome which is one of the largest in the world!
