The Eastern and Oriental Hotel, Penang Britain's involvement with Penang began in 1876 when the island was granted to the British East India Company who established a free port at George Town. As trade boomed after the opening of the Suez Canal 1869 and the arrival of steamships, the island prospered. The Eastern Hotel was built in 1884 by four Armenian brothers, the Sarkies, followed soon after by the Oriental Hotel. They were merged into the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in 1889. This grand hotel became known as `the premier hotel east of Suez' and the brothers went on to build Raffles in Singapore. Behind the elegant waterfront facade of today's E&O, the hotel is divided into two wings. The Heritage Wing is in fact the original 1885 hotel, while the Victory Annexe wing, where Saga guests will stay, opened in 2013 on the site of the 1929 original Victory Annexe. Rooms are contemporary with colonial touches and marble-tiled bathrooms with free-standing baths. Getting You There Prices are based on Malaysia Airlines from Heathrow.
