Mount Fuji in spring ACTIVITY LEVEL Day 1: UK-Tokyo. Fly overnight to Tokyo. Day 2: Tokyo. Transfer to your hotel, where you'll stay for two nights. Day 3: Tokyo. Discover Tokyo's clash of old and new on a tour of the city, where peaceful temples, gardens and wooden houses are dwarfed by high-rise modernity. Perhaps circumnavigate the city on the Yamanote Line railway for fantastic urban panoramas. B Day 4: Lake Kawaguchiko.Travel to Kawaguchiko, stopping en route at Kamakura, the ancient capital of Japan, with its shrines and temples, where you'll see the Hase Kannon Temple and visit Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. Afterwards, continue to Hakone and ascend to the summit of Mount Kamiyama by the Komagatake ropeway (cable car). Later, enjoy a cruise on Lake Ashi in the caldera of the Mount Hakone volcano. Afterwards, transfer to your hotel in Kawaguchiko where you stay overnight, enjoying dinner this evening. B, D Day 5: Matsumoto-Takayama. Experience a sightseeing tour of 8th-century Matsumoto and discover Matsumoto Castle, a national treasure and the best-preserved castle in Japan. Travel through rural Japan to Takayama where you stay for two nights. B, D Day 6: Takayama. Explore charming, unspoilt Takayama on a full-day walking tour. Peruse the Asaichi Morning Market selling crafts and fresh produce, visit an exhibition of elaborate festival floats that date back hundreds of years, see the traditional wooden homes of `Little Kyoto' and enjoy a traditional tea ceremony at an authentic tea house. B Day 7: Shirakawago-Kanazawa. Visit the unique mountain-top village of Shirakawago to discover the art of Japanese paper making. Then travel to Kanazawa, a centre for traditional craft, and visit Kenroku-en Garden, one of the most beautiful feudal lords' gardens in Japan. Stay overnight in Kanazawa. B Day 8: Kyoto. After some free time in Kanazawa, travel to the station for your Thunderbird Express rail journey to Kyoto. Stay four nights in Kyoto. B Day 9: Kyoto. A full-day tour reveals Kyoto. Founded in 794, it is widely considered Japan's cultural heart and is a living museum of the country's artistic and cultural heritage. There are over 2,000 shrines and temples in the city. Visit Kiyomizu and Kinkakuji Temples, Nijo Castle and enjoy a kimono show. B Day 10: Kyoto. Spend today at leisure exploring Kyoto. Perhaps visit the Gion geisha district, the stunning Bamboo Grove of Arashiyama or stroll in Imperial Palace Park. Alternatively, an exciting non-exclusive optional excursion by bullet train visits Hiroshima where the first atomic bomb was dropped, to see the Peace Memorial Park and the `floating' Itsukushima Shrine. B Day 11: Kyoto. Explore more of Kyoto as well as the ancient political centre of Nara and sacred deer park. Also visit the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum and Todaiji Temple, the largest wooden temple in the world containing the world's largest bronze Buddha. Enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant with a performance by a maiko ­ an apprentice geisha. B, D Days 12-13: Kyoto-UK. Travel to Osaka airport for your return overnight flight to the UK.
