Experience the hustle and bustle of Amritsar, marvel at the beauty of Shimla, see the glorious Taj Mahal and more, as you explore this fascinating country and its culture. Views of Shimla ACTIVITY LEVEL Day 1: UK-Delhi. Fly overnight to Delhi. Day 2: Delhi. Arrive in Delhi where you transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay. Enjoy lunch and the chance to relax, before dinner at your hotel. L, D Day 3 Delhi-Amritsar. Fly to Amritsar, where you stay for two nights. Perhaps join an optional excursion to a Palki ceremony at the famous Golden Temple. B, D Day 4 Amritsar. This morning, a sightseeing tour visits Jallianwalah Bagh, the scene of a notorious massacre in 1919. Visit the Durgiana or `silver' Hindu temple, and the Golden Temple ­ the Sikh's most sacred monument ­ and the community kitchen nearby which provides free meals for up to 10,000 pilgrims and visitors every day! This afternoon, travel to the border town of Wagah to see the famous spectacle of the changing of the guard ceremony. B, D Day 5: Amritsar-Chandigarh. A long but rewarding journey takes you to Chandigarh ­ the hub of northern India, where you stay overnight. Discover some of the highlights of this carefully-planned, modern city featuring French Colonial-influenced architecture, as you enjoy some sightseeing this afternoon. B, D Day 6: Chandigarh-Shimla. Travel to Shimla­ dubbed the 'Queen of the Hills' set amid the foothills of the Himalayas. Once the summer capital of the British in India, its ties with the British Raj left a legacy of splendid colonial edifices and quaint cottages. Spend the next four nights at a Heritage grand hotel. B, D Day 7: Shimla sightseeing. A morning sightseeing tour visits the Mall ­ Shimla's bustling commercial area, and onto Observatory Hill to see the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, the summer home of the British Viceroy in India. The British Raj was ruled from here and the Partition Agreement negotiated. You'll also see Scandal Point, before enjoying a free afternoon to explore independently. B, D Day 8: Himalayan Queen Express. Step aboard the Himalayan Queen Express for an unforgettable train journey along the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla railway. You'll travel through spectacular scenery as this narrow gauge train winds its way through the lower Himalayas, before continuing by road up to the Tara Devi temple with its panoramic views. B, D Day 9: Shimla. Enjoy a day at leisure, or join an exhilarating five kilometre guided walking tour up to Jakhoo temple. B, D Day 10: Shimla-Delhi. Leave Shimla and travel to Kalka Railway station to board the Shatabdi Express for the four-hour journey to Delhi, where you'll spend the next two nights. B, D Day 11: Delhi. An included sightseeing tour explores the highlights of Old and New Delhi including Raj Ghat, and Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India. See bustling Chandni Chowk market, visit the 12th-century Qutab Minar, the mausoleum of Emperor Humayun, and drive past the India Gate, as well as other important highlights.
