Uganda's endangered gorillas ACTIVITY LEVEL Day 1: UK-Entebbe, Uganda. Fly overnight to Uganda. Day 2: Entebbe. Arrive in Entebbe and transfer to your guest house, set in tropical gardens. Explore the city at leisure ­ once the country's colonial capital, it boasts a relaxed tempo and urban oases of green. D Day 3: Kibale National Park. This morning travel to the Kibale National Park where you'll spend the next two nights at a hotel. Transfers on the tour are long but incredibly scenic, making `getting there' half the fun. En route today you'll pass through Uganda's tea-growing area with the opportunity to explore a plantation. This afternoon, you have free time to explore the landscaped gardens or take the 10-minute walk into the friendly town of Fort Portal. B, L, D Days 4: Kibale National Park. Kibale Forest is home to the largest population of endangered chimpanzees in Uganda and has the highest diversity and density of primates in Africa. This morning, trek through the forest in search of chimpanzees and rare birds. Enjoy a traditional lunch at Tinka's Homestead before a guided walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a terrific experience for birders. Later, you might like to visit a local school. B, L, D Day 5: Queen Elizabeth National Park. This morning, enjoy a guided hike on Mount Rwenzori's diamond trail. Accompanied by an experienced guide explore the forests of the foothills, spotting primates and birds with fleeting glimpses of the Mountains of the Moon through the canopy. The 10-kilometre hike takes around four hours. Continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park and enjoy a safari drive. Stay two nights in a safari lodge on the Kazinga Channel. B, L, D Day 6: Queen Elizabeth National Park. This morning, set out on a game drive through the National Park. The park's diverse biospheres support over 100 species of mammal including colobus, chimpanzee, red tailed monkey and olive baboon. This afternoon, visit a local fishing village and meet the boatmen. Cruise along the Kazinga Channel and hopefully see hippos and monstrous Nile crocodiles. B, L, D Day 7: Bwindi National Park. Depart for Bwindi National Park, home of the mountain gorilla. On the way enjoy a game drive through the Ishasha sector, home of the rare tree-climbing lion. Continue to Bwindi National Park and check into a lodge for a three-night stay. B, L, D Days 8: Bwindi National Park. Trek through Bwindi National Park in the company of personal porters and an experienced guide. Discover the diverse plants and wildlife of the tropical rainforest and get close to family groups of mountain gorillas. There are 700 of these peaceful and highly-intelligent creatures in the park and the groups you will visit are accustomed to the presence of tourists. This evening, enjoy a lecture on the gorillas from an eminent primatologist. (Please note: due to the limited availability of permits, your trek may take place on day 9 instead.) B, L, D Day 9: Bwindi National Park. Relax at the hotel or join one of the many optional excursions on offer. These include a second distinct gorilla trek, a community walk to meet a traditional healer, local beer maker and Batwa Pygmies, or a Bwindi forest walk exploring the magical cloud forest. B, L, D Day 10: Lake Mburu National Park. Enjoy a six-hour scenic drive to Lake Mburu National Park. As you enter the park, a patchwork of savannah, forest, swamp and isolated rocks, you're treated to a game drive, with the chance to spot herds of impala and zebra among other wild creatures. Check into your lodge, from where you can spot buffalo, eland, impala and zebra in the valley below. Later, visit cattle herders to learn about their lives and work.
