THAILAND Thailand Panorama 14 nights from £2299 Including optional travel insurance or from £2228 without insurance§ This tour of northern Thailand reveals the tribal culture of Chiang Rai, visits the ancient capital at Sukothai and the temple complex of Ayutthaya, reveals events at the River Kwai and concludes in the lively capital Bangkok. Grand Palace, Bangkok ACTIVITY LEVEL Day 1: UK-Chiang Rai. Fly overnight to Thailand. Day 2:Chiang Rai. Arrive and transfer to Chiang Rai for a two-night stay, with a welcome drink and dinner here tonight. D Day 3: Chiang Rai. Visit a tea plantation en route to the `Golden Triangle', where the Mekong and Ruak Rivers join, marking the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. Enjoy a long tail boat ride on the Mekong before returning to your hotel. B, L Day 4: Chiang Mai. Travel to Chiang Mai for a three-night stay. En route visit Wat Rong Khun ­ the White Temple ­ created by an artist who has interpreted Buddhist symbolism in his own surreal way, and the local Yao People. Continue to a Handicraft Village to see silk weaving and painted paper umbrellas being made. B, L Day 5: Chiang Mai. Visit the Ethical Elephant Sanctuary, a not-for-profit project run by Karen hill tribe people, then the small forest temple of Wat Palad. Discover the grand mountain-top Wat Phra That temple at sunset, reaching it by the cable car. Tonight, enjoy a Kantake dinner show. B, L, D Day 6: Chiang Mai. Enjoy a cookery class this morning, after shopping at a colourful market. You'll learn to make various Thai dishes, and enjoy them for lunch. Afternoon at leisure. B, L Day 7: Phitsanulok. Drive to the city of Phitsanulok, one of the largest in northern Thailand, for an overnight stay, visiting a tea plantation en route. Enjoy some free time to explore the city. B, L Day 8: Sukhothai. This morning, travel to Sukhothai. You'll take a tram tour of Sukhothai Historical Park, the remains of Old Sukothai, the first capital of Thailand founded in 1238. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, around 27 square miles, and home to the grand Wat Mahathat. Lunch is at a local restaurant. Head to your nearby hotel for an overnight stay. B, L Day 9: Ayutthaya. Take a long but scenic drive to Ayutthaya to stay overnight. Tour the famous, UNESCO-listed ruins of the temple complex founded in 1350 and the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom. Visit the grandest temple of the site, Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, part of the Royal Palace complex. Admire the chedi (dome-shaped Buddhist shrine) at Wat Yai Chai Mongkol and the Buddhist temple of Wat Mahathat. B, L Day 10: Kanchanaburi. Visit Ayutthaya's Bang Pa-In Palace, the 17th-century former Royal Summer Residence. Afterwards, drive to Kanchanaburi ­ famous for the bridge over the River Kwai ­ for a two-night stay. B, L Day 11: Kanchanaburi. Today, explore the poignant Thailand-Burma Railway Centre to learn the story of the `Death Railway', immortalised in the film Bridge on the River Kwai. From 1942 prisoners' of war held by the Japanese were forced to work on the construction of the Siam-Burma railway. Thousands died and you'll visit the Allied War Cemetery. Lunch is in a restaurant, with the afternoon at leisure. B, L Day 12: Bangkok. Travel to Thailand's capital, Bangkok, for a three-night stay in the heart of the city. En route board a boat and set out among the vendors at the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. B, D Day 13: Bangkok. Join a morning tour of the city, visiting the Grand Palace, the Buddhist temple Wat Arun and Emerald Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Kaew). You'll also visit Bangkok's oldest and largest temple complex ­ Wat Pho ­ where you'll see the magnificent 46-metre-long Reclining Buddha. Afterwards, board a long-boat for a ride on the Chao Phraya River to the impressive Pak Khlong Talad Flower Market. B, L Day 14: Bangkok. At leisure. Enjoy a farewell dinner at the hotel tonight.
