Discover the rustic charm and unique culture of the country's `heel', then journey through remote Calabria, pausing in a European Capital of Culture for 2019 ­ Matera, before enjoying the classic beauty of Sicily. Mount Etna dominates Taormina in Sicily ACTIVITY LEVEL Day 1: UK-Naples-Caserta. Fly to Naples then transfer to Caserta, staying overnight at the locally rated 4-star Hotel dei Cavalieri. Located in the heart of the town, the hotel overlooks the Piazza Luigi Vanvitelli and is a short distance from the Royal Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. D Day 2: Alberobello. After visiting the medieval town of Trani in Puglia ­ the `heel' of Italy ­ with its castle, cathedral and old town, stay three nights at the locally rated 4-star Grand Hotel La Chiusa di Chietri. On the outskirts of Alberobello, the hotel is set in its own grounds which were part of the original farm or 'chiusa', from which the hotel takes its name. The hotel features a wellness centre, an outdoor pool (seasonal) and a spa offering a variety of treatments (additional cost). B, D Day 3: Alberobello, Martina Franca and Ostuni. An included guided tour takes in charming Alberobello ­ famed for its unique 'trulli' houses. You'll also visit Martina Franca, with its particularly beutiful old town, and the 'white city' of Ostuni, where whitewashed buildings set on a hillside overlook the sea. B, D Day 4: Alberobello. Join a full day included excursion to Lecce, the stunning baroque city known as the `Florence of the south', which includes the opportunity to see inside a prestigious 'Palazzo Nobiliare' house and enjoy an aperitif as guests of the family. B, D Day 5: Altomonte. Travel to Altomonte in Calabria, via Matera ­ a European capital of Culture for 2019 ­ where you'll see the intriguing houses and churches carved out of rock and known as `i sassi'. Stay at the family-run 4-star Hotel Barbieri for three nights. B, D Day 6: Altomonte. Today enjoy a full-day included excursion to Rossano, a charming town known for its liquorice production. Visit the 11th-century Santa Maria del Patire monastery and see the Codex Purpureo, the oldest illustrated Gospel book, before exploring the ancient archaeological site of Sibari. B, D Day 7: Altomonte. Enjoy a half-day orientation tour of Altomonte to explore its historical treasures. B, D Day 8: Giardini Naxos, Sicily. Drive south to Reggio Calabria, and pause at the National Archaeological Museum to see its famous Riace warriors. Board the ferry across the straits of Messina, a sea crossing of about 25 minutes. On arrival in Sicily, enjoy a scenic drive to Giardini Naxos, a seaside resort at the foot of Taormina, where you'll stay three nights at the locally rated 4-star Hotel Caesar Palace. B, D Day 9: Giardini Naxos, Sicily. An optional excursion takes you to one of Sicily's oldest tourist destinations, picturesque Taormina with its ancient Greek theatre and dramatic backdrop. You then continue to Mount Etna. B, D Day 10: Giardini Naxos, Sicily. On your last day in Sicily you can either relax in the sun or join a final optional trip to Syracuse, a city founded nearly 3,000 years ago. B, D Day 11: Catania-UK.
