See the iconic Taj Mahal, the mighty Amber Fort, the Sanchi Buddhist sanctuary and more as you unlock some of the mysteries, architectural and archaeological marvels, and cities of the region. NEW Sunrise over the Ganges River ACTIVITY LEVEL Day 1: UK-Delhi. Fly overnight to Delhi. Day 2: Delhi. Transfer to your hotel, with a welcome dinner and briefing this evening. D Day 3: Delhi. Set off on a morning walking tour of Old Delhi, taking in Dariba Kalan ­ the `silver street', Kinari bazaar and the bustling market of Chandni Chowk. Pass the 17th century Jama Masjid ­ India's largest mosque, and Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib ­ a Sikh place of worship. Later, join your coach for a drive past some of the highlights of New Delhi including India Gate, Parliament Buildings, and the President's residence, concluding with a visit to the 13th century Qutub Minar minaret. B, D Day 4: Delhi-Varanasi. Fly to the ancient holy city of Varanasi, situated along the River Ganges and a place of Hindu pilgrimage. With its wealth of temples, 88 riverside ghats where steps lead down to the river for bathing and ceremonies, and more, it is regarded as the cultural capital of India. Enjoy an evening Aarti ceremony at the Ghats, with a traditional Litti-Choka meal at a private Haveli. B, D Day 5: Varanasi. Before breakfast, cruise past the ghats with their worshippers and pilgrims, plus the burning ghats where cremations take place. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure, or perhaps join an optional excursion to Sarnath, where Buddha preached his first sermon. B, D Day 6: Varanasi-Jaipur. Fly to the `pink city' of Jaipur, capital of the Rajasthan region, where you stay for two nights. Perhaps join an optional visit to Choti Choper. B, D Day 7: Jaipur. Visit the magnificent Amber Fort, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan. Step into another world as you discover its courtyards, chambers, hallways and palaces with their stunning decoration and peaceful gardens. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure, or join an optional tour of Jaipur. B, D Day 8: Jaipur-Agra. En route to Agra, pause to visit the 9th century stepwell of Chand Baori in Abhaneri, one of the largest and finest in the world. Continue to Agra where you stay for the next two nights. Optional trip to a show this evening. B, D Day 9: Agra. Visit two UNESCO World Heritage sites today, starting with a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal, regarded as one of the seven new wonders of the world. Constructed in white marble, this stunning 17th century building took around 22 years and over 20,000 workers and craftsmen to complete. Later, visit the Agra Fort, whose towering walls and interior resemble a city in itself. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure, or an optional excursion to see the `Baby Taj'. B,D Day 10: Agra-Bhopal. Travel to Bhopal by train, where you'll stay for two nights. Enjoy an afternoon tour of the city, taking in the north with its mosques and bazaars, as well as the modern south. You'll also visit Taj-ul-Majid, one of Asia's largest mosques, the smaller Jama Masjid, and the performing arts centre of Bharat Bhawan. This evening enjoy an authentic Bhopal dinner, with an opportunity to discuss the cuisine with a local host. B, D Day 11: Bhopal. Travel first to the Buddhist monuments at Sanchi to see the 1st-2nd century BC stupa, temples, palaces, monasteries and pillars. Next, continue to Bhimbetka at the foot of the Vindhyan Mountains, home to rock shelters decorated with Middle Stone Age (Mesolithic) and later rock art paintings. En route back to Bhopal, you'll also visit the monolithic, unfinished 11th-century temple of Bhojpur. B, D Day 12: Bhopal-Khajuraho. Travel by express train to Khajuraho, where you stay for two nights. This afternoon there's a guided visit to the city's renowned Western Group of Temples, built between 950 and 1050 AD and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
