Depart on your overnight flight. Day 2: Colombo. Receive a garlanded welcome then head to The Gateway Hotel (4Q) in Seeduwa, a peaceful oasis in the middle of a coconut plantation. Relax in style and enjoy the tropical warmth and exotic birdsong. D Day 3: Habarana. Get a panoramic taste of Colombo city with its tuk-tuks and mopeds on a tour that takes you past stupas and the bustling bazaar. Escape the chaos of the city and follow a scenic route past pineapple farms and paddy fields to Habarana. Stay two nights at the luxurious Cinnamon Lodge (4Q+), where chattering monkeys and busy palm squirrels haunt the gardens. Learn about the delights of Sri Lankan cuisine in a cookery demonstration that will tantalise your taste buds. B, D Day 4: Sigiriya-Polonnaruwa. Make a choice between two amazing optional excursions: go to towering Sigirya Rock Fortress ­ aka Lion Rock ­ and ascend the heights to see the remains of the 5th century palace that once topped this 180 metre granite rock. Alternatively explore the ancient citadel of Polonnaruwa to wonder at the exquisite craftsmanship that created this once-great city. B, L, D Day 5: DambullaMatale-Kandy. Head for the hill country and cooler temperatures, stopping to explore UNESCO listed Dambulla Cave Temple. Join white-robed pilgrims visiting this venerable cave complex that is packed with murals, and figures of Buddha, and other gods and goddesses. Keep an eye out for monkeys that snatch and grab floral temple offerings. Stop at a spice garden in Matale to learn more the cultivation, trade, and uses of local spice. Follow the snaking road to the historic former kingdom of Kandy. Stay two nights at the Cinnamon Citadel Hotel (4Q). Tonight take in a riotously colourful and athletic performance of traditional dance. B, L, D Day 6: Kandy. Explore the Royal Palace and the ornate golden-roofed Temple of the Tooth, home to a sacred tooth relic of Buddah that attracts thousands of pilgrims. By way of contrast visit the Royal Botanic Garden of Peradeniya and admire its orchid collection and towering exotic trees. You'll also visit a gem lapidary, plus a shopping tour in Kandy. B, L, D Day 7: Kandy-Nuwara Eliya. Head high into the beautiful hill country, stopping to visit one of the great tea plantations. Learn all about tea cultivation, the finer points of production, and have a cuppa of the local leaf.
