Fly into Reykjavik for the short transfer to your hotel in Reykjavik for your first night's stay. Afterwards enjoy a tour of Reykjavik, including the old town centre, the Parliament, cathedral, harbour and the city's main landmark, Hallgrimskirkja. Along the way you'll also drive past Arbaejarsafn outdoor museum, where preserved buildings offer a fascinating glimpse into Reykjavik's past. D Day 2: ReykjavikBorgarnes. Travel north through a landscape of lush valleys and lakes to visit Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring ­ it emits around 180 litres of steaming-hot water a second! You'll also visit the photogenic waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Stay the next two nights at a hotel in the Borgarnes area. B, D Day 3: Snaefellsnes. Today's scenic journey around the Snaefellsnes Peninsula will reveal Snaefellsjokull glacier, which Jules Verne immortalised in fiction as being the entrance to the centre of the Earth. You'll also visit the golden sandy beach of Budir and Arnarstapi, whose rocky shores are a haven for kittiwakes and Arctic terns. B, D Day 4: Borgarnes-Akureyri. Set off early for the far north of the island, pausing en route at an 18th-century turf farm where you'll have the chance to see how Icelanders lived in centuries past at the Glaumbaer folk museum. You arrive in time for a late afternoon sightseeing tour of Akureyri's pretty Old Town. Stay the next two nights at at a hotel in the Akureyri area. B, D Day 5: Husavik. Travel to the whale-watching capital of Husavik for a boat trip in search of these magnificent creatures ­ up to 11 species come to feed here in the summer so you'll have a good chance of spotting something.
