Explore this remarkable area travelling by ferry from Klaipeda to Smiltyne. Helsinki, city of Sibelius Finland's most famous composer, Sibelius, lived and worked in Helsinki. Born in 1865, Sibelius studied at the Helsinki Music Institute (now the Sibelius Academy) as a young man, periodically living in the city or at his home `Ainola', around 40 kilometres from Helsinki, where he died in 1957. Many of the composer's works were premiered in the city which is now home to Sibelius Park, and site of the impressive Sibelius Monument ­ an abstract sculpture comprising 600 hollow steel pipes designed by Eila Hiltunen.
