Day 1: UK to Cologne. Travel by coach from Folkestone to Cologne via Eurotunnel or ferry and embark Rex Rheni. Enjoy a welcome drinks reception and dinner on board tonight. Day 2: Cologne to Koblenz. Sail to Koblenz this morning, with its glorious location on the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. Explore independently or join an optional tour to the Festung Ehrenbreitstein, a citadel built by the Prussians, and now reached by cable car! Day 3: Koblenz to Rüdesheim. This morning, cruise the Middle Rhine between steep banks and past historic castles and Lorelei Rock. This afternoon your ship moors in the charming old wine town of Rüdesheim where wine taverns line the charming Drosselgasse. Perhaps join an optional visit to the enchanting Siegfried's Museum of Mechanical Music or a wine tasting this evening. Day 4: Rüdesheim to Speyer. Sail upstream to Speyer with its great Romanesque church, 12th-century Jewish baths and city gate. Moor overnight. Day 5: Speyer to Strasbourg. En route to Strasbourg, pause in Rastatt to join an included afternoon excursion to the beautiful Black Forest. Moor overnight in Strasbourg. Day 6 Strasbourg to Breisach. See Strasbourg's Cathédrale Notre-Dame, plus other highlights of the capital of Alsace on an included morning excursion and canal cruise. Cruise to Breisach. Day 7: Breisach to Basel. Perhaps join an optional excursion to Lake Titisee in the Black Forest. Alternatively, stay aboard and sail the Rhine to Basel in Switzerland. Day 8: Basel. Explore Basel, where Switzerland, Germany and France meet, or join an optional full-day tour to the Swiss alpine scenery of the Bernese Oberland. Depart early evening for Kehl. Day 9: Kehl. Arrive in Kehl, across the Rhine from Strasbourg, and enjoy a day exploring. Depart late afternoon for Mannheim. Day 10: Mannheim to Mainz. Enjoy breakfast in Mannheim, from where you can join an optional excursion to the beautiful old university city of Heidelberg. Or stay on board and cruise to historic Mainz, mooring overnight. Day 11: Mainz to Boppard to Alken. Cruise the UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge to the small riverside town of Boppard, in the valley of the mythical Lorelei, where you can go exploring or join an optional wine tasting excursion. Depart for Alken, arriving late tonight. Day 12: Alken to Cochem to Winningen. Cruise the Moselle to Cochem, one of the most popular places on the river. Perhaps visit the castle and sample local wines on an optional excursion or board a land train on another optional excursion. Sail to Winningen. Day 13: Winningen to Königswinter. Enjoy the morning wandering the narrow streets of the pretty wine village of Winningen, set among slopes of vines. Set sail for Königswinter, with an optional trip to the red wine producing Ahr Valley available. Day 14: Königswinter to Cologne. An optional excursion visits Bonn, birthplace of Beethoven, another takes a rack and pinion train to ruined Drachenfels Castle. Cruise back to Cologne with an afternoon to explore. Day 15: Cologne to UK. Disembark after breakfast and return to the UK. The Black Forest During your holiday you can look forward to taking an included excursion into the Black Forest. You'll take a scenic drive along the Schwarzwald Hochstrasse, which runs along the spine of this legendary region, and see some of Germany's most beautiful scenery. Stop off in Freudenstadt, at the east edge of the north Black Forest, which is famous for having the largest market square in Germany. Continue to Oppenau, a beautiful 12th-century town with elegant city gates. There will be time for tea and cake at the Hotel Kalikutt, where the Schwarzwald kirschtorte (Black Forest gateau) is highly recommended!
